This is a route I have inflicted on a group of RSF members at the 2006 Easter meet based at Tregaron. It’s one of those routes where an effort going up hill is amply rewarded with superb views in this case back towards the Cardiganshire coast and 3 miles swoop downhill to Pontrydfendigaid. Starting at Strata Florida abbey, which also is the start of the rough stuff down the Towy, despite the forestry some still quite challenging fords (in the Autumn of2008 someone in a 4x4 was killed after their vehicle turned over in these fords).
In heavy rain Reg and I were cycling beside Loch Awe towards Ford when we encountered Eddie birling along in the opposite direction. He was awa’ hame after a bad experience on the sodden route from Ford to Carron. We failed to coax him into following us to Carron bothy via the forestry roads after he checked the map and found no roads shown through the woods
Madam never was into biking. She would protest alarmingly; almost greit and wail that her dad had never allowed her a bike and she was far, far too old to learn new tricks! But the campervan had a bike rack and so had to have a bike, or even two, didn’t it? So here we are, a day’s drive and a refreshing night’s sleep from the Rotterdam ferry, parked up at the side of the River Rhine, drinking tea
I remember some correspondence recently about the pros and cons of wearing capes as against other garments. I am still strongly in favour of the cape. Not only do they keep you, your luggage, and the bike dry, but also they can be used as a tent, as when in notoriously wet Glen Affric. In the middle of the Glen I had to prepare our lunch with the rain teeming down. The trick is to sit on the tail of your cape and disappear inside
Could the broken rear wheel spoke have been a bad omen? The Saturday morning started murky. We were in no hurry since we had to wait for the spoke being replaced by a new one at Glentress Bikes in Peebles. So Kees and I walked the streets of town, had a number of ordinary coffees (most of which failed the test), gave a small donation to a band of creative scouts, had an arty coffee at the Eastgate Arts Centre,
This was a nice day’s trip designed to enjoy the clear skies, crisp air and snowy mountains. I had planned to cycle up the road via Chalet Reynard and then come down the off-road route on the south side through the Massif des Cedres . However on approach the signs were telling me that the col was closed so I decided to reverse the route so that I could sneak up to the col without being turned back.
