The route soon bared its teeth, the real climbing began and had me re-evaluating my grand plans of smashing out the 600k.

The track loops around a farm then starts to climb gradually… intothe wind. A sign reading ROAD CLOSED should have warned me to turn around and find another route, but the guidebooks say to ignore the sign and carry on.

I took the String Road west across Arran with views of Goat Fell, on to Shiskihe then took a right to Tormore where I detoured to look at some hut and stone circles.

The track becomes alittle too edgy for comfort for those whose handling skills are less than perfect, and as before there is a steep final push to the pass. This summit had been the intended spot to stand and sing the national anthem, butwe were too distracted by a flapjack that wanted eating.

The lush verges along the roads eventually guided us out of the danger zone and around noon we arrived at Walton where we spotted the welcoming sign 'Pub Of The Year 2024' so we enjoyed a hearty lunch.

On this sunny afternoon I was looking forward to following my carefully crafted mostly off-road route to the lovely Roddlesworth Woods with a refuelling stop at the nearby Ramblers’ Country Cafe.
