The RSF admin team must also point out that rides designated as members rides are precisely that, rides organised by a member and advertised here in case other members may wish to join them. We also request that all members putting a ride on add their name to the RSF ride leaders list to be covered under our insurance which you can read here. Adding your name is as simple as emailing the secretary and requesting your name be added to our ride leaders list.
Wendover Buckinghamshire
Wendover 'Birthday Ride'
This will be a ride of about 20 miles in the Chiltern Hills around Wendover. The pace is set by that of the slowest rider, or walker if people prefer to walk up the steeper hills. Being the Chilterns there will be mud, but we will do our best to avoid the worst areas.
This history of these rides date back to December 1982, when RSF Home Counties - North secretary Geoff Apps started a regular monthly ride on the 1st Sunday the month from Wendover Library car park. These rides were open to non-members and soon became popular with early adopters of the mountain bike like myself. They were the first of several monthly mountain bike rides that took place all over the UK promoted through a magazine called Making Tracks
I took over running these rides in 1988 when Geoff Apps moved away from the area. The rides continued every month until 1990 after which they became an annual event each December. They became known as the 'Birthday Rides' as they coincided with the birthday of Geoff Apps who would usually return to the area to lead the ride. Unfortunately, Geoff unexpectedly passed away in July 2024
