Another great turn out of over 20 for this our third Saddo Christmas Ride and Lunch at the Lime Kiln Cafe, despite rather dire warnings about rain and wind - this is Saddleworth after all!
Though some - Anita and Geoff - naming no names - preferred to skip the ride in favour of sneaking in dry and warm for just for the Christmas Lunch - we set off happily down the canal towards Greenfield. The ride is essentially a chance to get us out of the cafe and give them time to set up for lunch but since the weather looked to be bucking the forecast we set off for the Dovestone reservoir system, intent (well I was anyway!) on riding to the head of the valley where the waters from Holme Clough and Birchen Clough come tumbling down from Middle Edge Moss. Unfortunately as we started alongside Dovestone reservoir, so did the rain, light at first but getting heavier. Still, on we rode to the dam of the next reservoir, Yeoman Hey, where it is custom and practice to honour the King of Tonga and his visit. Sadly, this time his commemorative stone could not be found (thanks Phil!) and the rain meant we were best advised to press on. The top reservoir is Greenfield and thereafter it is a nice rough track with a few really steep climbs to the head of the valley and the start of the system.
Not everyone made it, but congratulations to those that did, and the rest we picked up again on a splendid descent all the way back along the reservoirs and safely back to the Lime Kiln.
Two big tables were set for us and we soon forgot the chill and damp as the Christmas spirit began to flow - and the Black Sheep - and the friendly staff served us a really excellent festive meal.
Tine passed so quickly, as it always does in good company and mid afternoon we began to say our farewells.
I should just like to end on a personal note to all Saddos, old and new. Many thanks for your excellent company and good cheer on the rides we have had throughout the year. It is always a pleasure to be out with you all. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year.
