The Dales offers some of the finest mountain biking around and this route certainly qualifies, climbing from Horton in Ribblesdale to the high point of 1968' on the Cam High road before reaching the road just beneath the 1:5 final bit of the Fleet Moss road climb. The views are superb and you may notice that Penyghent is about level with your viewpoint! Be careful on the road descent to Oughtershaw as its steep and loose gravel is lying here and there but enjoy it as you drop nearly 850' in a very short time. Just after the trelephone box there is a track leading off on the right although it's only marked as a footpath...your choice. Otherwise carry on along the road until you reach a sign saying Buckden 5 miles. Turn right here and follow the road along until it turns into forest fire road. Go left at the first junction and where the fire road turns left uphill carry straight on. Eventually you will see a muddy looking track through a gate on the left, take this, the underlying surface is better than you might think. Now comes the only technical sections of the day as the track is rough and rutted. Finally you come to a rocky runnel which can be ridden with care (look for the scant remains of some paving halfway down and use that) before a fast and furious descent brings you back to your start point |
