A 18 km loop starting at Eastridge Wood in Shropshire. Follow the signs for Eastridge Wood Cycle Trails in Habberley and you'll reach a car park. Head north to start and you'll climb and descend through the trees on fireroads and singletrack (there are in fact dedicated MTB trails in the woods). Leave the wood, head towards Snailbeach, then climb up The Hollies (many an ancient holly tree to be seen). It's then into the Stiperstones Nature Reserve and on to Devil's Chair. You'll see the ground fall spectacularly away to your right at Mytton Dingle and Perkins Beach. A rocky climb and descent towards Little Acres. Along Black Ditch, past Gatten Plantation (the famous Stiperstone rocks lie to your left on this section). Then up towards Shephard's Rock and back to the start through Brook Vessons Nature Reserve with views of Earl's Hill a constant presence. You'll encounter all sorts under tyre: gravel, spongy loam, rocks, bogs, streams. In fact some of tracks were the streams. But it was November 2019 (we'd had a bit of rain). Oh and the mud. Tyre-clogging, wheel-spinning mud. Riding in the summer may avoid this. But will it be as fun? NB I updated the gpx track in Feb 2020 to miss out what I believe was a short section on a non-permissive track. Riding two days after Storm Dennis, it was still a muddy experience and with the added challenge of toppled trees. |
